CETAC: AN INVALUABLE RESOURCE THAT SERVES PATIENTS ALL ACROSS THE JGH
The JGH’s Centre of Excellence in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Care (CETAC) is a leader in patient care, teaching and research on preventing and treating venous thrombosis and anticoagulation management at the JGH, and across the healthcare system in Quebec.
WHAT IS THROMBOSIS AND ANTICOAGULATION CARE?
Thrombosis is the formation of
blood clots
within the body. CETAC’s main area of focus is venous thrombosis: namely, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which occurs when a clot forms in the deep veins of the leg and causes leg swelling and pain, and pulmonary embolism (PE), when a clot travels to the lungs and causes breathlessness, chest pain, fainting and is sometimes fatal. Thrombosis is a frequent cause of disability and even death in hospitalized patients and the community.
The facts:
Approximately 21,000 visits per year are made to the Anticoagulation and Thrombosis Clinics at the JGH
On any given day, roughly 60 to 65 percent of JGH in-patients receive some form of blood-thinning medication
DVT results in a PE in roughly one out of five cases
There is a 5-30% risk of recurrent DVT/PE within five years after a first episode
Approximately 3% of all patients with PE suffer from a persistent blockage of blood flow through the lungs. These patients may eventually require lung surgery
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the third most common cardiovascular condition after a heart attack and stroke, with one in four Canadians who die from causes related to blood clots
VTE causes more deaths yearly than breast cancer, HIV and motor vehicle accidents combined
DR. SUSAN KAHN, FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF CETAC, AND HER TEAM
Dr. Susan Kahn’s expertise in thrombosis and anticoagulation care is well-established. CETAC’s current staff includes seven thrombosis physicians, all of whom have active research programs: Dr. Kahn, Dr. Blostein, Dr. Hirsch, Dr. Knecht, Dr. Koolian, Dr. Rodger and Dr. Tagalakis.
CETAC’s anticoagulation pharmacist ensures that in-patients and out-patients are on the right drug and dose of blood-thinning medication. A nurse educator provides service to patients in CETAC clinics, the Emergency Department and hospital wards. Fellows (trainees) from Quebec and around the world come to CETAC to do their thrombosis training to become future experts in the field. There is also a full-time administrator, a secretary for the clinic, multiple graduate students and numerous research personnel for CETAC’s 20+ clinical research studies.
